Retention Marketing: Why Second Purchases Matter More Than First Ones

Retention marketing focuses on getting people to buy again. Students learn this concept and think it means sending discount codes to previous customers. You export your buyer list, write an email, send 20 percent off.

Marketers who focus on retention look at purchase intervals. Iryna Marchenko manages campaigns for a pet supply shop. She calculated that dog food buyers reorder every 38 days on average. She set up reminders that send on day 35, before people run out and search for alternatives.

Timing outreach to natural replenishment cycles

A beginner sends monthly newsletters to everyone. Someone focused on retention sends messages when specific customers are likely to need products again. Coffee subscriptions, skincare refills, and seasonal clothing all have predictable cycles.

A vitamin brand analyzed reorder patterns and found customers who bought again within 60 days had an 80 percent chance of making a third purchase. Those who waited longer than 90 days rarely came back. They created a day 55 campaign offering a small incentive. Repeat purchase rate within the target window increased from 34 to 52 percent.

The approach shifts from treating all customers the same to recognizing that purchase timing varies by product category and individual behavior.
